Clay Bar DIY Clay Bar : The Solution to Pollution … on your car Clay barring your car is a simple and very effective way to clean the paintwork of any cars finish and prepare the finish for polishing or waxing. The clay itself is a polymer that picks up contaminants (industrial fall out, dirt, sap, over spray...) that has imbedded itself into your clear coat, leaving the clear coat clean and smooth to the touch. Yet it is generally soft enough to not remove your wax coat, but it is always a good idea for asthetics sake to lay down a fresh coat of your favorite carnauba wax at this time.
Clay barring:
- Take the clay into the palm of your hand and flatten out into a smooth disc
- Use a solution like Quick Detailer/Specialty Clay Lubricant to allow the clay to glide across the paint to pick up the contaminants without scratching.
- You will feel the grit and grime come off your paint with each swipe. Continue to rub the clay across until the clay glides across freely and is no longer picking up any dirt within the paint.
- Make sure to cover all areas of the car including the glass to help remove water spots and etching. You can even do the wheels. Work one area at a time and make sure the area is adequately lubricated.
Each bar of clay should last about 3-4 cars.
Keep checking the clay as your are working and when the clay becomes dirty kneed the clay until clean
After you are finished your car will be much smoother than you even thought possible and the paint will be ready for a fresh coat of wax or on to polishing/swirl removal.
